Monochrome blues

I forgot. In the everpresent longing for the sound of the ocean and the smell of salty fog as it rollls it's blanket in from the sea, I forgot one other thing that I especially miss about the Maritimes.

Where's the red?

Autumn on my coast is an unbelievable burst of colour - yellow, orange, some left-over green and RED!! Orangy red, fire engine red, even burgundy... with all the hues mixing together forming the illusion that the hills are on fire - ablaze with colour.

Here on the prairie the predominant fall colour is yellow. And when I say predominant, I mean only. There may still be a bit of green hanging around and some leaves may go straight to brown but truly the one...the only fall colour is yellow yellow yellow.

Don't get me wrong - there are prairie yellows that I rave about - canola fields, shorn wheatfields in late summer. I love those yellows.

But in the fall - I just need some red.
